St. James School Students Celebrate Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week with Friendship Bracelet Activity 🌈

St. James School recently participated in Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week with a meaningful and creative activity designed to promote kindness and friendship. Student council members led classes in a friendship bracelet-making initiative, where students crafted bracelets inscribed with words of kindness and love.

The bracelets, made with care, were either kept as a reminder of the importance of kindness or shared with friends to spread positive messages throughout the school community. This initiative highlights the school’s commitment to fostering a culture of respect, empathy, and inclusivity.

“As we mark Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, we are reminded of the power of kindness in creating an environment where all students feel valued,” said Jody O’Daiskey, Principal of St. James School. “These small acts of kindness, like sharing a bracelet with a friend, contribute to a larger culture of respect that we strive to nurture every day.”

St. James School encourages students to continue spreading kindness and positivity beyond the classroom, embodying the spirit of unity and compassion that is at the heart of the Sudbury Catholic Schools community.

St. James Donates Cookies to the Sudbury Food Bank 🍪

Mme Gabriella and Mme Kayla’s students sweetened the holiday season by donating cookies to the Sudbury Food Bank. The cookies, which were creatively designed as melted snowmen charmed everyone who attended.

Thanks to the hard work and creativity of the students, the cookies raised a total of $110, which will go directly to helping families and individuals who are facing food insecurity. With the impressive buying power of $1 equaling $6, the funds raised will be able to provide much-needed support, potentially offering up to $660 worth of food to the local community.

Mme Gabriella, students and the Sudbury Food Bank would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Amanda Aitchison, whose generous donation helped families in need. Her contribution played a key role in amplifying the impact of this initiative, allowing the group to make an even greater difference.

The cookies were donated back to the school, where students had the chance to enjoy them while supporting a great cause.

St. James Native-as-a-Second-Language (NSL) Program Participates in Atikameksheng Veterans Ceremony 💬

On November 8th, the St. James Native-as-a-Second-Language (NSL) Program had the honour of participating in the Atikameksheng Veterans Ceremony. During the ceremony, students proudly sang the National Anthem in both Anishnawbemowin and English, paying tribute to the sacrifices made by veterans and showing respect for the cultural heritage of the community.

The event provided a meaningful opportunity for students to learn more about the significance of Remembrance Day and the importance of acknowledging the contributions of those who served in times of war. In addition to the performance, students were gifted with a special lesson on the proper salute and its critical role during wartime, deepening their understanding of respect and honour in times of conflict.

St. James School is grateful to have been part of this special occasion and looks forward to continuing to engage students in activities that foster remembrance and respect for the sacrifices of the past.

St. James Art Club’s Luminaries Add a Creative Glow to Halloween 🏮

The St. James School Art Club recently engaged in a spirited Halloween-themed art project, creating a series of intricately designed luminary jars. This hands-on activity allowed students to showcase their creativity while embracing the festive atmosphere of the season.

Under the guidance of Art Club Coordinator, students carefully crafted their luminaries, which featured a variety of designs ranging from traditional spooky faces to glowing pumpkins. The finished products are not only a testament to the students’ artistic abilities but also add a unique and festive touch to the school’s Halloween celebrations.

“We are incredibly proud of the students’ creativity and dedication to this project,” said Jody O’Daiskey, Principal at St. James School. “These luminary jars are a wonderful example of the talent within our school community, and they perfectly capture the spirit of Halloween.”

The luminaries will be featured in upcoming school events, adding a warm and inviting glow to the festive atmosphere at St. James School.

St. James Catholic Elementary School Introduces Hockey as an Option for Students 🏒

Rather than the typical physical education class, which rotates through a variety of different sports throughout the year, St. James Catholic Elementary School students from grades six to eight now have the option to participate in the Hockey Focus Program. The new class focuses specifically on hockey skills, including puck handling, skating fundamentals, passing, and shooting.

The Hockey Focus Program is open to all students and is adaptable to players of varying skill levels and experience. The class emphasizes body movement, teamwork, dedication to improvement, and gameplay, rather than a grade on overall ability.

Twice a week, students walk across the street to Tom Davies Community Arena, where Skill Development Coaches Rob Dymtruk and Pat Courtney from Chiseled Hockey lead the class, helping students work as a team to improve their on-ice abilities.

“We have students with a wide range of abilities, from those who’ve been playing for years to beginners just learning to skate, but we are open and inclusive to everybody,” said Coach Rob Dymtruk. “It’s still a team sport. The students are all out here working with one another and helping each other…building teamwork and leadership skills.”

Some students who have more experience with the sport are using it as an opportunity to teach their classmates.  Easton, a Grade 8 student who has been playing hockey for ten years, shares his enthusiasm for the class. “It’s been an experience forming a stronger bond with my classmates. I usually only see them in class but now I have been seeing them on the ice as well. I’ve been helping some of the younger kids with edges. When I first started, I had a lot of trouble with edge work, so it’s nice that I can help out now.”

His appreciation for the class goes beyond the chance to improve his own skills; he values the opportunity to spend class time playing the game he loves most. “I prefer this class over a typical gym class setting because hockey is my favourite sport. I’d rather be out here for an hour than play a different sport in gym class and the coaches have been amazing. They teach us what we need to know while making it fun.”

Other students share Easton’s enthusiasm. Jody O’Daiskey, Principal at St. James Elementary noted, “Students are excited to attend and look forward to learning new skills from our certified trainers. They have commended the program’s inclusivity and well-rounded approach to meet students at an appropriate level. The focus on skill development, life lessons, and personal growth have resonated positively with students and their families.”

Beyond Professional Development: St. James Staff Participate in Ribbon Skirt and Shirt Making ✂️

St. James Staff participated in a Professional Activity (PA) Day on November 10th. In addition to planning for Student Achievement, the St. James team actively engaged in culturally enriching activities, including Ribbon Skirt/Shirt making and Rock painting, coordinated by Jessie Gorman, the school’s Indigenous Support Worker (ISW), alongside her cousin Leanne.

The significance of the cultural background was explained for both activities and, fostered collaboration among staff while enabling them to forge numerous connections throughout the day.

“Including the Indigenous culture into the school is an on-going task that all staff take part in beautifully and wholehearted,” say’s Jessie. “We had a day dedicated to hands on learning that focused on self-care, healthy well-being but more importantly- healing. Sharing knowledge of Indigenous histories and culture was the focal point on this day that everyone will carry long into their learning journey. St James commitment to Truth and Reconciliation is strong and genuine.”

During lunch, staff members enjoyed each other’s company while savouring homemade corn soup and Nish tacos. This shared experience not only nourished bodies but also strengthened the bonds within the team.

“The day showcased our commitment as Catholic Educators, blending professional development with cultural understanding. It was a day of learning, bonding, and living out our mission/vision as Catholic Educators.” Say’s Principal David Soehner.

A Brew-tiful Day: French Immersion Students Connect Over Coffee in Français ☕️

Today, the French Immersion classes of Mme Ranich, Mme O’Shaughnessy, and M. Laurins engaged in an enjoyable French oral activity, made possible with the generous support of Starbucks on Regent, which donated items for the occasion. Students were tasked with planning their desired drinks using provided prompts. After placing their orders, they had the delightful opportunity to enjoy a “coffee with a friend” and engage in spontaneous French conversations, all while savoring delicious treats.
