St. James School Students Shine at Walden Winter Carnival Boxcar Derby 🏁

Mme Widder’s Grade 3 students at St. James School showcased their creativity and enthusiasm at this year’s Walden Winter Carnival Boxcar Derby, where they raced their handmade boxcars in an exciting display of innovation and teamwork.

The students worked hard to design and build their boxcars, and their efforts paid off with incredible performances at the event. A special congratulations to Jessica, who placed third in Best Dressed, and Charles, who secured second place for Furthest Distance. Their achievements reflect the dedication and ingenuity of all participants.

St. James School extends its gratitude to the parents who supported this initiative, particularly those who helped transport the boxcars to the carnival. Their involvement was instrumental in making this hands-on learning experience a success.

The school community is incredibly proud of all the students for their enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and creativity. Events like these reinforce the importance of collaboration and experiential learning at St. James School.

St. James Grade 1 Students Explore Emotional Awareness with Ontario SPCA Visit 🐶

On February 11th, Grade 1 students at St. James Catholic Elementary School had a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of emotions—both their own and those of animals—through an interactive visit from the Ontario SPCA.

Led by engaging discussions and educational videos, the session helped students recognize that, just like humans, animals express emotions in different ways. By observing how animals react to joy, fear, or stress—whether through wagging tails or seeking a quiet space—students drew meaningful connections to their own emotional experiences.

One student shared that learning about their dog’s feelings made them more attentive to its needs, while others reflected on how the videos helped them better understand their own emotions. The experience encouraged students to become more empathetic, not only toward animals but also toward their peers, fostering greater emotional awareness and understanding.

This visit was a valuable opportunity for students to develop mindfulness and compassion, reinforcing the importance of recognizing and respecting the emotions of all living beings.

St. James Kindergarten Students Engage in Exciting Hands-On Mining Activity with Let’s Talk Science ⛏

St. James Catholic School’s kindergarten class had an exciting opportunity to engage in a hands-on mining activity, thanks to Let’s Talk Science. Recently, students in Mme Hagen’s class participated in an educational and interactive experience that introduced them to the fascinating world of mining and mineral exploration.

As part of the activity, students formed four mining companies: Minecraft, Pickaxe, Big Nickel, and Silver Canada. Equipped with toothpicks, paperclips, and popsicle sticks, the young miners mined “minerals” (beads) from trays of birdseed “dirt,” simulating the mining process. Through this fun and engaging experience, students learned about rocks, minerals, and the methods used in mining, sparking curiosity and creativity in the classroom.

“This hands-on experience was a wonderful way to introduce our students to the basics of mining and geology,” said Mme Hagen. “The excitement and engagement from the students as they explored the materials was incredible. It’s important to give students these types of learning experiences early on to foster a love for science and exploration.”

The mining activity was an incredible success, and the students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to explore the science behind mining in such a playful yet educational way.

St. James Students Explore Strong and Stable Structures with Let’s Talk Science 🚀

On December 3rd, students from Mme Ranich and Mrs. Slonina’s classes at St. James Catholic School took part in an exciting and educational hands-on activity as part of their science lessons. With the support of Let’s Talk Science, the students explored the concept of strong and stable structures.

The students were tasked with designing and building their own bridges using toothpicks and marshmallows. Once their structures were complete, they tested their bridges’ stability by hanging pennies in a cup, a fun challenge that helped them understand the importance of balance and strength in design.

The activity concluded with a round of applause for Group 4, who successfully supported an impressive 49 pennies on their bridge, demonstrating exceptional skill and teamwork.

St. James Catholic School would like to thank Let’s Talk Science for this engaging and educational experience that helped students learn about the principles of engineering and structural integrity in a hands-on and fun way.
