Bellmore New Chair of the Board at SCDSB

12/02/2015 - On Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Trustee Michael Bellmore was acclaimed as the new Board Chair for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Born in Sudbury, Bellmore is a proud alumnus of Sudbury Catholic Schools (Immaculate Conception and St. Charles College). He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, however he was elected to the former Sudbury District Roman Catholic Separate School Board in 1994 as one of the youngest ever elected, and served until 1997. Read more...


St. James Students Participate in Celebration of La Ste-Catherine

12/01/2015 - On Wednesday, November 25th, St. James Catholic Elementary School students participated in a celebration of La Ste-Catherine. They learned about Marguerite Bourgeoys and how this nun established a school in Ville-Marie (Montreal) by making pull taffy (la tire) to attract the native students to her class. The French immersion teachers prepared the taffy the night before so that their students can taste this sweet confection. Read more...

11/17/2015 - Earth Rangers (Kids' Conservation Organization) visited St. James Catholic Elementary School recently and delivered a dynamic, fun and interactive presentation featuring live Animal Ambassadors. "Game-On" SCDSB Students Learn Equity and 5-Sided Soccer

10/22/2015 - On Wednesday October 21st representatives from The Ontario Soccer Association and The Ontario Blind Sports Association visited both St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School and St. James Catholic Elementary School to deliver a clinic on 5-sided football. 5-sided football is actually 5-sided soccer. It is the game of soccer adapted for the blind and partially sighted. Sudbury Catholic Specialist Teacher of the blind & partially sighted Adriano Simonato made the arrangements for this interactive presentation as he want to provide an opportunity for the visually impaired students as well as the sighted students to learn this sport. Read more...


St. James Sisters Donate to Cancer

10/13/2015 - In lieu of gifts for her 12th Birthday, St. James Catholic Elementary School student, Alyssa Derro asked that family and friends give her a small donation for the Northern Cancer Foundation. St. James Junior Basketball Team Captures Gold

05/04/2015 - Congratulations to the St. James Catholic Elementary School Junior Basketball A Team that captured the Gold Medal in last weekend's SCDSB Tournament. St. James players won both the male and female Most Valuable Player Awards of the tournament. Congratulations to Allie Weiler and Sam MacGillivary. Update on Negotiations

04/24/2015 - You may have heard in the media that the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association ((OECTA), representing elementary, secondary and occasional teachers in our Board voted to approve strike action. Central bargaining is continuing between the province, unions and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association (OCSTA), which represents Catholic school boards at the provincial table. At present, we are not aware of any planned labour disruptions by OECTA. Read more...

St James Learning about Planting and How Seeds Grow

04/21/2015 - Mademoiselle Prosser's grade 1 french immersion class at St. James Catholic Elementary School have been learning about partners in their community this month. With the help of Mrs. Hachez, her students got the chance to learn about planting and how seeds work. They even got to plant their own tomato, bean, and marigold plants. Learning Through Play at St. James FDK!

10/20/2014 - At St. James Catholic Elementary School Full Day Kindergarten students are encouraged to explore and develop new knowledge/skills during self-directed learning centres. In building centres that are equipped by the FDK team (teachers Mme. Belanger and Miss Hoeg), students use Lego to strengthen math, visual arts and fine motor concepts/skills. Exploring Art Exciting for St. James Students

10/09/2014 - Junior and senior students from St. James school enjoyed a field trip to the Sudbury Art Gallery on Monday, October 6. Students explored the use of lines and elements of design such as shading to create original works of art with water paints. Students learned four paint techniques using various brushes during their workshop and applied those skills in this authentic learning experience! Read more...

St. James 5/6 Softball Team Captures Gold!!

06/17/2014 - On Friday June 6th, 2014 the grade 5/6 St. James Catholic Elementary School softball team participated in the Greater Sudbury Police Service annual slo-pitch tournament. The tournament serves to honour the memory of Sgt. Rick McDonald, who loved baseball and working with youth in our community. Sgt. McDonald was killed in the line of duty on July 28, 1999. The annual GSPS 5/6 Slo-Pitch tournament allows young students from across the Sudbury region to interact with police officers and have a great day playing ball.  Read more...

Author Chad Solomon visits St. John/ St. James School

06/04/2014 - Graphic novelist and creator of Rabbit and Bear Paws, Chad Solomon visited both St. John and St. James Catholic Elementary Schools. The Rabbit and Bear Paws series involves heroes that share humourous adentures based on tradition Aboriginal teachings. The students at both schools had an opportunity to learn some traditional Aboriginal teachings, as well as, the creativity and innovation that is involved with designing graphic novels.  Read more...

Career Fair at St. James

05/14/2014 - The grade 7 & 8 students at St. James Catholic School, recently used Career Cruising to help them choose a career to research. Some students displayed their work on a backboard while others created a slideshow on a Macbook. On May 6, they presented their work in the gym as a "career fair" for one another and guests. Students had to describe the career, list the required skills and working conditions, display a sample career path with possible earnings, conduct an interview with someone in the field, look at the education required to become qualified for this career. Then they had to work backwards from the admission requirements to the college or university, to select their secondary school courses.  Read more...

The Next Great Invention

04/23/2014 - The Terrific 3/4's and Fantastic 4/5's at St. James Catholic Elementary School recently participated in an Invention Convention. They began by researching and writing a biography about a famous inventor. This inspired students to create their own invention that makes life a little easier. St. James Community, Care and Culture Club Supports Fellow Student

03/19/2014 - The students at St. James Catholic Elementary School demonstrated the Catholic virtue of compassion recently. Logan Lariviere, a low vision student, travelled to Ottawa to be fitted for his new technological glasses. The "Community, Care and Culture" club choose to sell candy grams for Valentine's Day and have a coin collection to help Logan and his parents purchase his much needed and expensive glasses. The whole school gave generously and, during our Olympic spirit day, Logan was presented with a cheque by teacher Tammy Lanci. Read more...

The human circle symbolizes friendships, inclusiveness, respect, faith, and community. We are all in this building together and we need to always show in our actions that we are a St. James family. Operation Christmas Child at St. James

11/22/2013 - Once again teachers Jesse Maloney and Craig Lusk's classes at St. James Catholic Elementary School participate in a annual program called Operation Christmas Child. The goal, through Operation Christmas Child, is to bring joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoeboxes. Each gift is a special reminder to a child that he or she is loved. Operation Christmas Child focuses on the true meaning of Christmas - how it is greater to give than to receive. Read more...

11/22/2013 - Local newspaper Walden Today held a writing contest for their students about helping the environment. St. James Catholic Elementary School was recently notified that four of their students were winners in the contest. In Gr. 2 Lucas Mullaly took First Prize, Gr. 4 Jackson Drigo took Third Prize, Gr. 6 Claire Niemelainen took Second Prize and Patricia Deschenes took Third Prize.  Read more...


St. James Students Connecting Globally

11/12/2013 - The Grade 7 and 8 students at St. James Catholic Elementary School have prepared care packages for an orphanage in Kenya this past month. Mary Crowder from the Rehena In Step Ministry came to pick up the goods and thanked the students for their generosity. "Our Dreams Matter Too" At St. James

11/12/2013 - For the second year in a row St. James Catholic School has been recognized for its participation in the ' Our Dreams Matter Too' campaign. This campaign was originally created by Shannen Koostachin, youth education advocate from the Attawapiskat First Nation in Ontario. St. James Students Shear Locks for Cancer

10/24/2013 - Mr. and Mrs. Derro are very proud of their two daughters. Alyssa, 10, and in Grade 5, and little sister Ava, 8, in Grade 3, had 10 inches cut from their long dark locks in front of their peers at St. James Catholic Elementary School. The girls decided together to go door-to-door raising money for the Sam Bruno PET Scan Fund in exchange for their promise to cut their hair. They also decided to donate their locks to a good cause. Beep Baseball at St. James

06/11/2013 - Students at St. James Catholic Elementary School have been introduced to a new sport. The sport is called Beep Baseball. Adriano Simonato, the teacher of the blind and partially sighted for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board introduced the sport to the students a year ago and it is now part of the school’s intramural sports program.  Read more...


Perkins Family Restaurant Serves Up Pancakes At St. James School

06/04/2013 - Todd Connors, Director of Operations for Perkins Restaurants prepared and served St. James Catholic Elementary School with a pancake breakfast recently. He graciously donated breakfast to thank the school community for their penny donations that went directly to support Pennies for Pediatrics. St. James School raised over $560 in pennies for this worthwhile cause. "Pennies for Pediatrics is a fundraising drive to benefit children’s care at Health Sciences North." Read more...


Learning About Goalball at SCDSB

06/04/2013 - Students from St. James Elementary School recently participated in the Ontario Blind Sports Association Recreational Tournament. The tournament took place in Brantford Ontarion on May 11th, 2013. In addition, Ontario Blind Sports Association, along with the CNIB, provided goalball clinics at St. James Elementary school, Bishop Alexander Carter Secondary School and Marymount Academy on May 23rd and 24th. Read more...


Learning Culture Through Technology at St. James

04/15/2013 - Students at St. James Catholic Elementary School utilize 21’st century technology in their daily native language lessons. 21’st century technology provides students with the digital tools, authentic learning experiences, and the opportunity to learn through differentiated instruction. Duncan McIntosh, the Native Language teacher feels that the use of technology really supports the students through engagement opportunities and appeals to their audio/visual learning styles. “Through the use of technology, we are able to connect the historical traditions of the Anishnawbek people using contemporary tools which is something the students can relate to,” McIntosh states.  Read more...

Rocks and Rings at St. James Catholic Elementary School

St. James Celebrates Franco-Fun Day

03/22/2013 - March 20th was International Francophone Day and to celebrate the occasion, St. James Catholic Elementary School students dressed in green and white. This day is a celebration of French language in all countries. Some students participated in an activity called "New Age Kurling", others sang French songs and participated in French DPA (daily physical activity). St. James Celebrates Their 2nd Annual Family, Fun, Faith Night

03/19/2013 - St. James Catholic Elementary School students, staff and school council collaborated with Pius X Roman Catholic Church on February 27th to bring the community another fun filled faith-based evening. The evening offered several faith-based activities such as: pin the halo on the angel, virtue bowling and the very popular "inclusion Bingo". Inclusion Bingo was created by the schools C3 council (Catholic, Community and Culture). Each space in the Bingo card contains a faith based word such as "family, God, helping, caring, compassion, etc…" Prizes were graciously donated by various community partners. St. James School Is Giving Away Their Pennies

03/18/2013 - Students from St. James Catholic Elementary School in Lively collected pennies over the month of February to save children's lives in our community. In collaboration with Todd Connors from Perkins Restaurants Ontario and the St. James C3 council (Catholic, Community and Culture), students filled 2 large water jugs with pennies. Each jug weighed over 100 pounds. "Pennies for Pediatrics is a fundraising drive to benefit children’s care at Health Sciences North. St. James Sings to a Hometown Crowd

02/15/2013 - On Friday, February 8, 2013, students at St. James Catholic Elementary School took part in an exciting opportunity. These students were asked to sing the national anthem at the Friday night Wolves game in front of a full crowd at the Sudbury Arena. Walden Winter Carnival Committee Gifts Carved Bear to St. James

01/11/2013 - Students and staff at St. James Catholic Elementary School received a wonderful gift the first week back to school from the Christmas break. A beautifully carved wooden bear was donated to the school from the Walden Winter Carnival Organizing Committee. The school, which has been a part of the winter carnival for over 20 years, was given the bear that was carved by a chainsaw as a part of last year’s carnival. The St. James mascot is a bear so their newly donated bear – now representing their mascot, is now proudly on display in the school’s library with a commemorative plaque. Read more...

St. James Students Demonstrate the True Meaning of Christmas

12/06/2012 - The Fantastic Fours and Terrific 4/5's at St. James Catholic Elementary School got into the Christmas spirit early by packing gift boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Families went out and purchased items such as: hygiene products, clothing, toys, and school supplies. When all was said and done, the two classes filled 47 boxes. Inside each box was a letter of hope to the child that will be receiving the gifts. The St. James staff is very thankful for the generosity and support of the students and their families. "Our Dreams Matter Too" to St. James Students

12/04/2012 - St. James Catholic Elementary School was recently recognized for its participation in “Our Dreams Matter Too” - a walk for culturally based equity for First Nation children. The walk is organized to say now is the time for First Nation and non- Aboriginal children to work together to ensure all children in Canada receive equitable, culturally based services that help them succeed and feel proud of who they are. The project began as a result of the school’s vice principal, Dan Stargratt introducing the Grade 7/8 FI class to “Shannen's Dream” which is a student and youth focused campaign designed to raise awareness about inequitable funding for First Nations children, and encourages supporters to write letters to their Member of Parliament, to the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, and to the Prime Minister of Canada. Read more...

St. James – Bears Who Care!

10/15/2012 - Dressed in their best jammies, brothers Jackson and Carter Drigo proudly show off their coin donation in a specially decorated can. St. James held a PJ Day and coin drive on Friday, October 5th. Students brought in loose change in support of a local family whose young son has been diagnosed with cancer. Heading into the Thanksgiving weekend, students were reminded that even though the young boy attends a different school, we are all part of a larger community and we are thankful for the chance to show our support . 10/15/2012 - Pumped up by the cheers of his friends and teachers, St. James Bear Scott Chandler gives it his all at the finish line of the 4th Annual Laurentian University Cross-Country Challenge. Held on a beautiful sunny day in September, St. James was thrilled to send more than 95 students from Grades 3 – 8 to this exciting event. Commitment to Stewardship at St. James

05/28/2012 - During Catholic Education week the Grade 8 students at St. James Catholic school painted birdhouses as a demonstration of the Virtue of Stewardship. The students learned the importance of placing birdhouses around their home because they provide nesting sites for birds. Providing nesting sites helps preserve bird populations. This tradition of the Huicholl Indians of Mexico is based on the belief that the person that "God's Eye" was created for, will be more knowledgeable to the ways of Jesus and wiser. Partners Sign Community Threat Assessment Protocol

04/04/2012 - Representatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, area school boards and local agencies signed a Community Threat Assessment Protocol on March 27, 2012, pledging to work together to ensure schools remain safe for students and staff. The Community Threat Assessment Protocol is a collaborative response to student behaviour that may pose a risk to other students, staff and members of the community. 03/23/2012 - As part of the Sudbury Catholic Board’s celebration of the International Day of La Francophonie, students in all schools across the board were involved in designing a button that reflected their perspective on celebrating and acknowledging the French language. The first place winner in the Sudbury Catholic Board’s Francophone button contest was Roman Leblanc, a grade 8 French Immersion student at St. James School. Roman “designed the button to represent our French culture. The button includes the Canadian and Franco-Ontarien flags and the flags are surrounded by the international French colours”. Sudbury Catholic Celebrates Birth at St. James

12/15/2011 - St James Catholic Elementary Catholic School hosted a Drum Birthing ceremony on Tuesday, December 13th. Students from grades three to six watched as their peers awakened their drums through the guidance of Verna Hardwick, Ojibwe Language Teacher. In September, students had the opportunity to attend a three day retreat at the Killarney Shebanoning Outdoor Environmental Education Centre and participated in everything from scraping the hide to stretching it and preparing their rings. Drum Maker, Clyde Migwans, instructed students on the process and art of drum making. Students walked away with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the hard work that goes into making traditional hand drums and gained valuable lessons in patience, stewardship and respect.  Read more...


St. James Community Generously Supports the Sudbury Infant Food Bank

12/08/2011 - The St. James C3 (Catholic, Community and Culture) Student Council decided there was no better way to celebrate the Christmas season than by helping other children in need. Upon hearing that the Sudbury Infant Food Bank is running a Christmas campaign to help raise funds and supplies for Greater Sudbury’s most vulnerable; babies and young children, the students planned a theme day in support of this campaign. Every student at St. James participated in the annual “Toonies for Terry” Walk and over $500 in donations were forwarded to the Terry Fox Foundation. Mrs. Denomme’s Grade 8 students added a mathematical dimension to their walk. Pichi Ngamo at St. James Catholic School

06/06/2011 - Lana Trudeau, Aboriginal support worker with the Sudbury Catholic School Board has the led the Pichi Ngamo Program (Robin Sing) at St. James Catholic School. The Pichi Ngamo program is a seven session Aboriginal focus lunch program, which builds cultural esteem and pride. The students involved in the project had the opportunity to create cultural crafts such as Medicine bags, handshakers, and beaded key chains. 05/16/2011 - St. James Catholic School kicked off its May virtue of Empathy with an inspirational presentation by the school custodian Sunny Fournier. Fournier visited Haiti after the devastating earthquakes and he shared a slideshow with the students depicting the struggles but also the hopes of Haitians as they try to rebuild. St. James Learns Traditional Art of Pysanky

04/21/2011 - During the Easter season, the grade 6,7and 8 French Immersion class from St. James Catholic School in Lively welcomed Jan Buley, a professor at Laurentian University who loves to teach the art of Pysanky--Ukrainian Easter eggs. These eggs are a traditional craft in Ukraine, with a history of thousands of years. Pysanky are decorated in many steps using a kistka, beeswax and several colours of dye. The students loved the experience and learned a very short but interesting lesson on the traditional craftof egg decorating and Ukrainian culture.  Read more...

St. James Catholic School Student a District Winner in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest!

02/28/2011 - Each year, Lions clubs around the world sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This year’s theme was ‘Vision of Peace’. Students, ages 11,12,13 were eligible to participate. Brandon Digby, a grade7 student at St. James Catholic School in Lively captured the A-5 district award and was presented with a cheque of $250. St. James Catholic School Selected Provincially as a School on the Move

06/20/2010 - St. James Catholic School joined an elite group of schools across Ontario recently that have been recognized by the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat as a School on the Move. The School on the Move initiative highlights schools that are making substantial progress in raising student achievement and have sustained this progress over several years. St. James was nominated by the Ministry of Education and after a visit to the school by Ministry officials, was one of only 33 schools selected provincially. Read more...


New Life at St. James School

06/14/2010 - Students at St. James Catholic Elementary school had the unique opportunity this past month to witness the hatching of baby ducks. Grade 5 student, Danielle Battistelli has a love for ducks so her family offered the school a whole kit including eggs, an incubator and all supplies and equipment needed in order to hatch some duck eggs. The school jumped at this chance to show students the miracle of new life and within a few weeks time the first batch of eggs hatched. Read more...

St. James Hosts Family Barbecue for Catholic Education Week

05/07/2010 - Students, family members and staff gathered at St. James Catholic Elementary School in Lively on the evening of May 7 as the school hosted a family barbecue and celebration. 03/31/2010 - The Grade One classes at St. James School in Lively enjoyed a visit by Sarah Wendorf, Education Co-ordinator for the Wild at Heart Wildlife Refuge Centre in Lively. Sarah gave a wonderful and informative laptop presentation showing how the refuge centre rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned animals. 07/04/2006 - The St. James Catholic School Drummers welcomed guest speaker Sharon Firth in traditional native fashion with an Honour Song at the school prior to her presentation to the student body. Sharon was a member of Canada's national cross-country ski team for an unprecedented 17 consecutive years, competing on the World Cup circuit and in four winter Olympic Games. In her presentation at both St. James and St. David Catholic Schools Ms. Firth delivered a powerful message to all students. St. James Catholic School Hosts Boys' Literacy Launch "Travel the World of Literacy"

05/15/2006 - St. James Catholic School has received funding from the Ministry of Education for action research on Boys' Literacy. The goals of this initiative are to improve boys' attitudes toward reading and ultimately to improve their literacy skills. The school is purchasing reading materials that engage all readers, but in particular young male readers. Items such as nonfiction materials, humour books, action and adventure series, and sports cards and magazines are part of the strategies of the Literacy Program. Read more...
